There are many different approaches to therapy and it is important that there be a good fit between a therapist’s approach and the needs of the patient. So, let me attempt to explain mine. My theoretical orientation is Psychodynamic, which means that the goal of therapy is to help patients gain insight about how early relationships shaped their personalities and influenced how they live their lives. This process can help people break free from their negative life patterns. In addition to these important insights, I also help my patients work on making necessary changes in their current lives. We focus on developing healthier life strategies and the skills they need to manage their emotions, function to their fullest potential, and improve their interpersonal relationships. People who want to heal following losses or trauma, people who want to know and better understand themselves, and people who are seeking change at a deeper level can benefit from this approach to therapy.
Psychotherapy is about technique. As a doctoral level clinical psychologist, I am thoroughly trained in theory and therapeutic interventions. However, even more importantly, psychotherapy is relational. In order for it to be effective, there needs to be a positive and trusting relationship between the therapist and the patient. It is my goal to develop such a relationship with each of my patients and for them to feel known, understood, and supported.
